Cooper’s older brother Carter Vanderbilt Cooper committed suicide by jumping from the 14th-floor terrace of Vanderbilt’s New York City penthouse apartment on July 22, 1988, at the age of 23. When his brother passed away Anderson was just 21 years old.

Later his mother Gloria Vanderbilt wrote a book titled “A Mother’s Story” about her son’s death where she expressed her belief that the suicide was caused by a psychotic episode induced by an allergy to the anti-asthma prescription drug salbutamol.

Because of his brother’s suicide, Cooper’s interest in journalism sparked and he wrote:
